The Fix-it-and-Forget-it workout continues!

The next yummy meal was Chilli Con Carne :)

I combined it with some bread bowls (the recipe I used for them is HERE)

It was AMAZING!
Luckily there were some rests so they have been put in the freezer for later this month.

Sausage Bean Quickie

Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook

I received my copy of Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook a couple of weeks ago and I have decided to dust my Crockpot off and start to recreate some of these amazing sounding recipes each month.
I have chosen 7 recipes for this month and will slowly work my way through them and make notes along the way.

fix-it and forget-it

This month I will be making:

Sausage Sauerkraut Supper pg 154
Smothered Lentils pg 158
Wild Rice Hot Dish pg 170
Lemon Garlic Chicken pg 185
Sausage Bean Quickie pg 208
Four-Bean Medley pg 212
Vegetable Curry pg 229

My idea is to, once I find the recipes that suit us, to make a dehydrated version of these recipes for storage, or to make sure that I have all the tinned goods I need permanently in my cupboard.

How good does this recipe look?
This is the Sausage Bean Quickie which I served with couscous.

I love the fact that I can literally drop the ingredients into the crockpot, and come home to a hearty, healthy meal.

This meal could definitely be made out of your storage - all you would need is a couple of tins, namely:

Baked Beans (I used these with the sauce)
Pineapples in juice
Kidney Beans drained
Pork sausages (I used pork viennas, but you could use tinned or canned sausages)

Added to this you need a couple of tablespoons of flour, some teaspoons of sugar and vinegar and you are good to go!

Bon appétit!

Our Bees 4 Weeks In

Our bees

After 4 weeks our bees had settled in wonderfully.
We obviously had managed to get hold of the queen when we got the swarm as there are new larva everywhere :)

Meet our New Bees

Beekeeping

I can't believe it has almost been a full year since we last posted.
Not too much has happened on the homesteading front in that time due to the fact that we both have had rather busy work schedules and not much time at all to spend in the garden.
I thought I would start (as I have a little more time on my hands now again) to introduce you to our new bee colony. If nothing else I will try and update you on the goings on of this fabulous hobby!

I have been studying beekeeping over the last year and a half and have been attending a local beekeeping course.
We weren't planning on keeping bees this year, but I was offered two old, handmade hives that had already been kitted out with wax plates and were ready to use.
We placed them in the garden and decided that if we happen to come across a colony/swarm then we will start in earnest.

At the beginning of last month exactly that happened.
I noticed a swarm in one of my neighbours gardens and she was more than happy for me to come by and fetch the swarm from them.

Stefan and I managed to get over 3/4 of the colony into one of the hives and they have since been growing from strength to strength.
